The project, by A. Citterio & Partners, is part of a broader spectrum of interventions to renovate and eliminate the severe urban and social decay of Milan’s Central Station area. The intervention consists of a major building renovation of a building consisting of 3 existing bodies for tertiary use of 6 floors. The structural intervention was very invasive and required a complete emptying of the buildings while preserving the perimeter masonry (protected by a monumental heritage restriction) with the subsequent reconstruction from scratch of most of the interior structures.
Foundations, steel and concrete slabs, and new reinforced concrete stairwells were included in a delicate controlled demolition operation.
